I'm probably going to find a different book to learn from. The writing is good, there are many figures to explain concepts, and there are so - many - errors. Wow. There is no errata for this book that I can find, either.

I am on page 20 right now, and I've come across at least a dozen mistakes - not small errors, like a mistaken key press, but numbered equations with errors such as "y = x" being printed where "y = f(x)" was intended, random terms being forgotten in numbered equations, and missing blocks in system block diagrams. Most are obvious after doing a double take, but I don't think I want to deal with this every other page - especially when the equations and diagrams start to become more complicated.

No fluff here, this book is chock full of valuable and insightful information on the application of recurrent closed loop neural nets for estimating and controlling nonlinear time series.

Chronic sleep deprivation, which probably affects at least one third of American adults, causes daytime sleepiness and disrupts daily life. Episodes of acute sleep deprivation may be even more common and occur across a spectrum of ages and occupations. In this scholarly and extensively referenced book, which brings together commentary and discussion from a large group of expert investigators, readers will find detailed accounts of many obvious and not-so-obvious problems concerning sleep deprivation. For example, how is sleep deprivation manifested in infants, adolescents, and adults? What clinical tests of psychomotor vigilance and unintentional tendency to sleep are available to determine whether a pilot, a truck driver, or a physician can do his or her job safely under conditions of acute or chronic sleep deprivation? Does the failure of a physician to warn a sleep-deprived patient of potential third-party injury or death constitute negligence? How does sleep deprivation affect "cognitive readiness" in the military? The reader may be surprised to learn that people who get a greater-than-normal amount of sleep appear to have a higher risk of death than those who get less sleep and that insomniacs, in principle among the least rested of all, do not appear to have increased mortality. Highlights of the book include a remarkable medicolegal perspective on sleep deprivation, a discussion of its social effects, a detailed and apparently unbiased chapter on stimulant therapy, lucid discussions of environmental and behavioral therapies aimed at ameliorating the effects of sleep deprivation, and a scientifically compelling chapter on the recuperative value of naps. There are also authoritative chapters on subjective and objective testing for the tendency to fall asleep and psychomotor vigilance; the effects of inadequate sleep on the performance of children, adolescents, and physicians; and the effects of sleep deprivation on driving, round-the-clock operations, and commercial and public transportation. The book is not successful in all ways. Given the dense and difficult biologic and sociological information to be reviewed, the uninitiated reader would have been better served by an early overview and a biologic and clinical definition of sleep deprivation, along with a perspective on its importance. The epidemiologic and sociological effects of sleep deprivation are not discussed until page 195, long after the appearance of the numerous perspectives and strategies used in testing for such effects. There are also chapters that contain excellent discussions of sleep disorders in special populations, but they tend to dilute the effect of the discussion of sleep deprivation as a whole. This book highlights the frustrating paucity of empirical data from well-designed investigations into the many important questions regarding the biology of sleep deprivation. Despite Sun Tzu's 2300-year-old admonition in The Art of War to avoid fatigue in the military arena, it is not yet precisely clear to what extent human cognitive and social performance is affected by acute or chronic sleep deprivation or by the disorders that lead to the condition. The lesson, it appears, is that we must now develop a newfound respect for the adverse possibilities of sleep deprivation in all its biologic forms and move on with scientific investigation into those aspects that are most compelling to the individual and society. Most interesting! Terrific text for experts and novices alike.

I am impressed by the depth and skills with which difficult topics are handled by the authors of individual chapters as well as by the Editor. Introductory chapter 1 is indeed a state-of-the-art vision of systems biology for today's biologists, chemists, and engineers. The entire book is masterfully written by most competent experts and academic teachers available today. Notably the chapter about chaos (Chapter 6) is the best text on the topic I have read thus far in my long life (I'm not very young and I've read scores of publications about non-linear phenomena.) Chapters written under the leadership of Prof. Salamon (Chapters 3 and 9) are most convincing texts about macroscopic thermodynamics that are accessible to general readers as well as to the experts. (I guess Chapter 9 is for the experts because of the required mathematical background.) Biochemical Systems Theory is a subject of Chapter 2, which in itself is an interesting text in systems biochemistry including its (long) history. Chapter 5 introduces a concept of organic system, while discussing problems of ecological networks. This notion (organic system) is of great importance for systems biology because not every organic system needs to be a living entity. From the point of view of scientific method, organic properties (of organic systems) can be treated by the techniques analogous to dynamic systems but the organic properties (initial and boundary conditions) are not compatible with those known from physics. In a way organic systems could be a methodological bridge between classical science and modern systems biology. The remaining chapters cover engineering aspects of systems biology (chapters 6 and 7) as well as a history of philosophical investigations relevant to life sciences (Chapter 4.)
The book is very much worth reading by anyone interested in science (particularly in biology.)

Outstanding state-of-the-art text-handbook-monograph in one short volume

This text should be recommended to every student of systems biology and, for that matter, to most practicing biologists who are interested in profound understanding of systems methodology in life sciences. The book focuses on and explores the very foundations of modeling complex organic systems from the perspectives that in the past were called "cybernetics", "systems science", "General Systems Theory", or "Relational Biology". It does however contain two state-of-the-art chapters on thermodynamics, one on biochemical kinetics, and one on non-linear dynamics; topics that are also covered in a number of other systems biology books. The methodology of dealing with networks is covered as well but to a lesser extent than in many other systems biology texts. The glossary of terms from a variety of different fields that contribute to systems biology is also included, such that the book can be used by self-learners.
Overall the book is a great achievement of a group of world-class top experts who contributed definitive chapters in their respective sub-fields of systems biology. I highly recommend this text as a valuable reading for all readers who wish to understand the phenomenon of life itself from a scientific point of view.

Really good book on the topic

This is an important book (I agree with another reviewer about this.) It covers all needed foundations of today's systems biology in a non-trivial way. It also contains a definitive guidance on terminology of systems theory and relational biology; something most other books with "systems biology" in the title are missing. It is true that (perhaps intentionally) the use of networks is only emphasized in one chapter (Chapter 5)while the ideas from thermodynamics, general systems theory and relational biology are explained in detail in several other chapters. That's why (I agree again with another reviewer) readers of this book who wish to study systems biology could greatly benefit from a supplementary reading of a good text on networks. On the other hand readers with some expertise in science and those who are familiar with networks will likely find a lot of intellectual satisfaction from reading this relatively short book from cover to cover.

Mostly OK book with good first chapter

This book is masive. The first article in the book is very useful, but the rest less so. As you get to the later chapters, the usefulness is lower. Good book for references.
