A very accessible book about the new power industry.

Although rather pricey. I thought this book was worth it. It is a very good layman's introduction to the electric power industry, power systems, and electric industry de-regulation. I found it particularly easy to read and the authors manage to make the material interesting and to keep the reading lively. The book appears to be quite objective -- in particular it goes into all the alternatives of the many steps in de-regulation, and reviews all sides of various issues and arguments about electric policy and de-regulation.
The first six chapters are tutorials on different aspects of the power industry, including its business structure and operation, electricity and how it is made, generation, transmission and distribution systems, etc. These were a big help to someone like me who does not have a background in electric power, and are a good "standby" in case I need to know more in the future. The second half of the book is a very thorough discussion of the why, what and how of de-regulation in the electric industry. The book provides a uniquely comprehensive yet accessible explanation of the reasons for and process of de-regulation, as well as the various types of de-regulated structures. It has a good number of tables and lists, and some really nice, explanatory drawings in the tutorial sections. There is a particularly lengthy glossary and a very thorough index, both of which make it a good reference book.

About the Author

Anthony Sleva is president of Sleva Associates, an electrical consulting and training company. He is a registered Professional Engineer with a BSEE degree from Pennsylvania State University. During his career, he has designed electrical systems for nuclear generating stations; designed 500-230 KV, 230-69 KV, 138-12 KV and 69-12 KV substations; provided technical support to power dispatchers, system operators and plant operators; and developed technical training programs for technicians, drafters, designers and technical clerks. Mr. Sleva specializes in the analysis of power system events that cause the loss of customer load and/or the initiation of emergency load control procedures as well as events that may have been caused by incorrect protective relay actuations.

From the ground up

The text of this book starts with bringing together all of the information which people need to understand fundamentally regarding protection systems. From there it goes very well in the parameters of operation and very good detail of the material in which to show what is permissible and what is potentially catastrophic. The formulas, graphs, along with the schematics are very detailed for even those who want to go into the Power Systems profession and have no experience. I would recommend this regardless of the price as this needs to be part of a professional library for the lineman wanting to learn more or the potential Electrical Engineer in need of a solid foundation of understanding the equipment.

Good book.

Great book for showing how to develop actual relay settings. Not many other practical relay books exist out there like this one that actually walk the reader through the development of settings, both the "how" and the "why". This book will literally step the reader through example problems on what values, equations, and considerations to use when setting protective relays. It's almost like having a personal mentor guide you through protective relay applications and settings. I haven't gotten through the entire book, but I don't believe it has motor or generator settings/applications. I would make that addition as a suggestion to the author for the next edition of this book. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book.
