A book I can recommend for my CIM course students!

I have taught a course on CIM for several years to fourth-year Mechanical Engineering students, but could not find a book to recommend. Well, this year my students will have a book for this course! The presentation and writing are clear, with many insights into the subject of manufacturing. The clarity of writing is matched by excellent illustrations. The book is well-edited, with very few misspellings and errors. With a broad range of manufacturing topics covered in a relatively small volume, the material is presented in a concise manner, which actually makes it easier for the reader to grasp the essential concepts without being overwhelmed with excessive details on any one subject. At the same time, there is enough theory to give something to explain in class and something to test on the exams. This approach should make this a good textbook for my students.

He was Executive Editor of Spectroscopy Letters and the Journal of Environmental Science and Health (both titles, Marcel Dekker, Inc.) and the Handbook of Spectroscopy and the Practical Handbook of Spectroscopy (both titles, CRC Press). He received the B.Sc. (1949), Ph.D. (1952), and D.Sc. (1978) degrees from the University of Birmingham, England.

EILEEN M. SKELLY FRAME recently was Clinical Assistant Professor and Visiting Research Professor, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York. Dr. Skelly Frame has extensive practical experience in the use of instrumental analysis to characterize a wide variety of substances, from biological samples and cosmetics to high temperature superconductors, polymers, metals, and alloys. Her industrial career includes supervisory roles at GE Corporate Research and Development, Stauffer Chemical Corporate R&D, and the Research Triangle Institute. She is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Society for Applied Spectroscopy, and the American Society for Testing and Materials. Dr. Skelly Frame received the B.S. degree in chemistry from Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge.

GEORGE M. FRAME II is Scientific Director, Chemical Biomonitoring Section of the Wadsworth Laboratory, New York State Department of Health, Albany. He has a wide range of experience in the field and has worked at the GE Corporate R&D Center, Pfizer Central Research, the U.S. Coast Guard R&D Center, the Maine Medical Center, and the USAF Biomedical Sciences Corps. He is an American Chemical Society member. Dr. Frame received the B.A. degree in chemistry from Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the Ph.D. degree in analytical chemistry from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Warning About "seach inside" pages

The current "search inside " pages are not from the 6th edition of Undergraduate Instrumental Analysis, but from the error-filled last edition in 1994. The two new coauthors have completely rewritten the book to eliminate the gross errors displayed on the pages able to be viewed on amazon from the last edition. Please do not consider the "search inside" material to be at all accurate for the new 6th edition. Eileen M. Skelly Frame and George M. Frame II (coauthors of the 6th edition).

Handbook of techniques

This book is less of a method of learning techniques than a reference material. There is so much information here that reading through it is not useful. It is far better used if you know about a technique already and want a bit more of an understanding of how to use it. The authors really know their analytic chemistry and all the information is really good. Just does not make a good student textbook.

A Significant Resource

Bonnie Osif has pulled together contributions of literature identification and appraisal from many authors in many countries without national bias. A splendid work that I wish was available to students at a smaller price. The student tends to believe that a textbook is a fair approximation of what is known and will probably balk at this cost. Instead, this book will make most of us humble in appreciation of the many forms of the body of knowledge. I suggest the reader get a copy - this reference will not disappoint and could expand your capabilities and your appreciation of the interconnections between engineering disciplines and other disciplines. It is a great browse for those who like to nose around in expanding their horizons.

Excellent Reference Resource for any library

The coverage in this reference is very thorough and covers all the disciplines of engineering. The sources include dictionaries, handbooks, textbooks, journals, online databases, online subject sites and associations. This resource will aid anyone who is starting out in an engineering discipline and the experienced engineer who needs help on a particular subject. I would recommend it for academic, special libraries and large public libraries where there is an interest in engineering. The only caveat I have is that it is already out of date. There are newer editions of some of the recommended sources available.

Not only would the expert working on a specific design benefit from this handbook, but also the general reader would get a very good working knowledge on transformer design because the book covers fundamentals and magnetic material characteristics in a very clearly written, easy-to-read style. … Along with all of the practical design examples, the book is filled with clear and well-annotated illustrations and circuit schematics that provide great insight; the many references make this book a must have for anyone designing transformers or inductors.

Among the best foundational material for magnetics design.

Wether you are an engineer, technician, or just an interested layman, this book will take you from the grass roots understanding of basic magnetics all the way through to some fairly advanced topics. Among magnetics engineers, I have found it to be one of THE BEST for properly setting up foundational knowledge and theory. Too many engineers have weak or incomplete foundations and quickly hit a plateau where they can't go further until they go back and really understand the basics. If you buy one book, buy this one. The other two books I would recommend of this caliber are no longer in print.

Great book by Colonel Wm. T. McLyman

I wish I had this book many years ago....Since it answers many design problems I have already figured out the hard way, through lots of grind and sweat... At this time I don't really need the book, but intrigued how the Colonel approaches magnetics problems in the same manner I approach them...
The book is written in a clear, no-nonsense straight to the point approach. The way all technical textbooks "should" be written.... Although a solid theoretical understanding is paramount in magnetics, there is no need to re-invent the wheel everytime you approach magnetics, the Colonel shows this, unlike books that start at Maxwell's equations to solve every problem is just an academic excercise to satisfy one's ego...
I did work at JPL briefly and wish I had the oppurtunity to sit down and talk to the Colonel...
I highly recommend this book... Other books to accompany this text would be by Reuben Lee "Electronic Transformers and Circuits" 2nd edition as well as the "Classic" "Magnetic Circuits and Transformers" by M.I.T (Hardcover 1958)

The images in the book (Kindle Edition) are of too low resolutions.
Even I zoom in using Kindle on iPad, I can hardly read the text in the image.
And in this book, there are a lot of text tables in the images.

Amazon, please update this book with higher resolution images.
