This is a good reference book, but in order to be useful it must be reviewed first. One cannot simply pick it up to answer a question. You need familiarity with the contents and organization to get effective use of the book. It has a great deal of material from various authors each of which has a personal style. For example, information about the chemistry of elastomers is located in three sections. The sum total of the material is quite good, but you should be prepared to search again after finding the first answer you seek when researching a topic. It's approximately the right length for the subject, but some topics are omitted or lightly covered, e.g., comparison of synthetic rubbers versus natural rubbers, chemistry of pyrolysis of scrap at the end of product life.

A Good Introduction to the Subject

This text was used in the fall of 2007 by my university professor to teach a graduate level engineering class on building energy auditing, reduction, and management. The professor taught a fair amount of material from his own notes. Although somewhat incomplete, I believe he indicated this book was the best text he could find on the subject.

The authors do a good job of explaining the intricacies of energy billing, illustrating economic analyses of energy usage, and showing examples of evaluating options for the reduction of energy consumption with supplied / assumed data. However, this subject area is broad and crosses a number of fields, including mechanical, electrical, industrial, construction, and control engineering, as well as economics. Human factors, design codes, safety, and liability issues are also involved. Entire books have been written on some subjects that are covered in a few pages or a chapter of the text. Regardless of the previous reviewer's opinion, I regard this text as an overview of the subject.

For those reasons, persons who actually want to conduct this work will probably require references from the American Society of Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Engineers (ASHRAE) and the Illuminating Engineering Society of America (IES) as well as this text. At a minimum, access to the ASHRAE handbooks, IES lighting publications, and good books on HVAC control theory and electrical power quality issues will be needed. These references are required to perform in depth studies with regard to estimating energy usage, requirements, and modifications. Computer software (not supplied) to calculate building heating and cooling loads should also be considered necessary.

Though perhaps beyond the scope of the text, a major omission is information regarding how to obtain the raw data required for the analyses. Information gathering for the purpose of making the required computations and assessing alternatives is no small task in itself. A fair amount of field work requiring physical observations and measurements will be needed to do any credible analysis. Thus, persons conducting this work ought to have an appropriate background (working knowledge, if possible) and a good understanding of the design and construction of the structures, machines, and systems involved. Moreover, they should possess hands-on technical capability to operate, measure the performance, modify, and adjust the mechanical and electrical systems involved. It is quite feasible for the energy analyst to hire qualified individuals to do this work for him. Nevertheless, the analyst needs to direct the efforts of the technician, know the right questions to ask, and be able to critically assess the test methodology, data, and the results.

JOSEPH M. NOVI is Director of the Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery and Assistant Residency Program Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Riverside Methodist Hospital, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA. He completed a Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Dr. Novi has been the recipient of several awards, including two Fellows’ Teaching Awards and the Outstanding Resident Educator award. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, and the International College of Surgeons, among others. Dr. Novi is also an editor for the American College of Physicians Physician’s Interactive Educational Resource and a reviewer for The Journal of Reproductive Medicine, the International Journal of Urogynecology, and the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

HELEN L. ROSS is Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, Florida, USA. She developed her interest in perimenopause while in private practice when she realized the effects of perimenopause on all aspects of a woman’s life. Consequently, Dr. Ross’s interest in perimenopause and menopause lead to presentations to local and state-wide groups on these topics. Bryan R. Fischer is President of Advanced Dimensional Management, a consulting and training firm in Sherwood, Oregon. Recognized worldwide as one of the foremost authorities on Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), Tolerance Stackups and Tolerance Analysis, he has more than twenty years of experience as a Tolerancing Specialist in mechanical design and engineering in the aerospace, automotive, defense, electronics, medical, nuclear, processing, packaging, semiconductor and many other industries. A Senior Level ASME Certified Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Professional and an SAE ARi Registered Consultant, he is a member of the ASME Y14.5 Sub-committee Support Group, a member of the ASME Y14.100 subcommittee and has assisted in the development of the newly released ASME Y14.41 and Y14.43 standards.

Interesting Material to learn and teach tolerance stacks

The book provide a good examples from the basic method of tolerance stack up calculation, like Worst case scenario and provide a good detail of the most advances like statistical tolerance stacks in multiple dimensions.The other good point is that the book is supported in most of the examples with the usage of GD&T examples which help me to understand in a better detail the application of the standard and the tolerance stack up calculation.

Good book to begin to learn and improve your skills in t-stacks, however I will still look for more examples, similar to the design that I am reviewing in my work today.(Consumer goods / Appliances)

Introduction to mechanical tolerance analysis

Read the book from cover to cover and work some examples. You should come away with a basic understanding of tolerance analysis and organizational skills to help your results make sense when you or your boss looks at it 2 weeks later. Don't give up read the whole book.
